Carved Path
Balance ~ Spectacle ~ Light
Historically, there were private homes on the perimeter of this Portland, Oregon block with a shared yard in the back. The form originated from these old residential site plans. I took these program rolls and flipped them to respond to the present urban condition. The sidewalk becomes a large carved pathway in the center for the main pedestrian circulation. There are two perpendicular secondary circulation pieces that overlap but do not intersect to create an indirect connection between programs. The pathway serves as a pedestrian path separated from the street, and can be used as a direct path across or as a beginning of the journey through the market. It allows air to flow through and gives light to the back spaces. Elements of the building create a permeable feel between indoor and outdoor space. The light glass with heavy walls form market spaces and the wood material on the inner private space, illustrating a clear difference of spaces.
